CTN Artist Spotlight

What is your name and the name of your company?
Tyler Carter and my company is Ty Carter Art.

How do you measure success?
Emotional reactions

What’s one mistake you made early on?
When I began pursuing art as a career, I made a common mistake that we make as artists. I was afraid to fail. I was letting my own insecurities influence my creativity and it held me back. Eventually, I realized failure was a critical part of art. We can’t discover our own style or feel by keeping our work under wraps. We need to put ourselves out there. That’s when real discovery begins.

What’s the toughest part of being in charge?
The toughest part of being in charge is when it’s good, it’s REALLY good and when it’s bad, it’s REALLY bad!

What is your best motivator?
My wife, family and Cafe Rio Smothered Burritos!

What’s your proudest accomplishment in your business?
When artists I respect want to spend their hard earned money on my work. It is a humbling experience.
What have you sacrificed? Ty Carter the artist is a work in progress. I need to be constantly reminded that all art and no play will make Ty a very dull boy! Because my creative juices are continually flowing, I need to stop myself from becoming too lop sided. I have to maintain a balance with the things I love, my family, art, soccer, movies, friends and smothered burritos.

What have you learned?
I’ve learned to stop worrying about what people want and just create what I like. More often than not, if it is interesting to me, it’s usually interesting to other people.

What’s next?
I’m planning on releasing my latest Musings and Wanderings book in 2014. It will be available at the CTN Expo in November! I’ll also be exhibiting at Comic Con San Diego, Salt Lake City and New York.
