Founded by Alex Alvarez in 1997, Gnomon is located in the heart of Hollywood and offers a full curriculum for careers in 3D, professionals in need of specialized training, custom training for production studios and online courses. In conjunction with several major studios across Los Angeles, our instructors and our esteemed Advisory Board, Gnomon’s curriculum and facilities have been designed to constantly evolve to reflect any new demands that may arise from the entertainment industry.

Gnomon’s entire curriculum has been developed, tested and is taught by some of the most recognized CG professionals working in the industry. At no other school are the Directors, Advisory Board members and instructors more involved in the production process. They work and consult for studios such as DreamWorks, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Sony Interactive, Digital Domain, Electronic Arts, Activision, Rock Star Games, and Blizzard, just to name a few.

Gnomon’s goal has always been to create an educational environment unlike any other – to pioneer a more effective way to prepare students and professionals for their career in the computer graphics entertainment industry – to provide a real education.

Gnomon’s instructor’s are working professionals who bring their passion and experience to the classroom. They know the importance of understanding how the real world operates and what a production pipeline looks like, to ensure our curriculum at Gnomon is always moving in tandem with the industry – wherever it might be headed.

Our curriculum resembles this structure by taking our students through completion of collaborative and in-class projects. At Gnomon, students complete these projects, which is key in securing employment after graduation. Gnomom students are able to take their projects from the smallest element of an idea to fully formed reality; all using similar methods and workflow used everyday in the entertainment industry. This is the work our students will take with them after graduation, and use to impress a future employer.

DARRELL VAN CITTERS is a nationally renowned animation director and leader of Renegade’s creative team.  Darrell trained at Cal Arts and got his start at Disney where he earned his first directing credit on the experimental short “Fun with Mr. Future” and developed the feature, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” He later joined Warner Bros. Classic Animation where he directed animated commercials and short films with the Looney Tunes characters, including the first theatrical Bugs Bunny short in 27 years, “Box Office Bunny”.  Along with his business partner, Ashley Postlewaite, he founded Renegade Animation in 1992.  Darrell oversees all of Renegade’s film, television and commercial projects and served as co-executive producer and animation director of “Christmas Is Here Again,” Renegade’s first animated feature.   Some of his other credits include “Captain Sturdy,” the award-winning Internet series “Elmo Aardvark: Outer Space Detective” and dozens of television commercials for internationally known brands.  Darrell also has a passion for animation and its history, and has just written and published a book on the making of the very first animated Christmas special, “Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol,” currently available at mrmagooschristmascarol.com.

ASHLEY POSTLEWAITE is a graduate of Stanford University and began her career in the glamorous world of children’s theater.  She got her start in animation with Warner Bros. Classic Animation and in 1992, joined Darrell Van Citters in founding Renegade Animation.  Ashley has produced animation for feature films, television, commercials, DVDs and a variety of new media applications and serves as Executive Producer for all of Renegade’s output.  She is also a past board member and president of the Young Entrepreneurs Organization, an international association of business leaders who have achieved success at a young age.

After three and a half years, we moved one block east to a much larger and more dynamic space. Still in the heart of quaint downtown Alhambra, we re-opened in March of 2008 with over 2000 square feet of open gallery space, 1000 square feet of shop/boutique, and over 3000 square feet of studio/production space.

Having exhibited both local artists and artists from abroad, and catering to an international customer base, we offer an extensive collection of original contemporary, illustrated, graphic, commercial, and narrative art. (All of which are carefully cataloged online in our website.)
