Hand-drawn Animation Dead or Alive? A case Study!

A philosophical look into the unique strengths and appeals of the hand drawn medium, with a goal of generating a new and different type of thinking that is  working towards creating vibrant works in hand-drawn animation. Mike Nguyen will show various visual clips to support this exciting presentation.

Mike Nguyen primary interest is the hand-drawn animation film making medium and aims to reflect beautiful thoughts toward this life on Earth.

Mike received his BFA in Character Animation at the California Institute of the Arts in 1988. Since then, he has worked primarily in the feature animation industry as a Character Animator in various studios, including Walt Disney, Warner Bros., and DreamWorks Animation. Among the films he had worked on include the critically acclaims “The Iron Giant” as a supervising animator.

In 2000, he co-founded July Films, an independent theatrical animation production company. His directing debut is the theatrical animated feature entitled “My Little World”, currently in production.

Mike has also been a Character Animation instructor at the California Institute of the Arts since 1994, and recently taken leave from instructing duty to devote full effort to the remaining leg of his film-in-progress; he also has given animation workshops in Denmark, Ireland, Thailand and Korea.
