Description: 2 sessions of 2 hours each *There will be (3) 2-5 minute breaks in each class period day – Days/Time: Friday and Saturday Nights 7:00- 9PM Pacing, camera angles, staging, overlapping action, where do you begin? In this story intensive our guest instructor Giancarlo Volpe will give his vast knowledge on his methodology of breaking down Dramatic and Action scenes. The demands of movies and TV productions require ever-increasing creativity with these types of scenes and we will show you the steps to unlocking your own personal dramatic/ action star from within. It’s not good enough anymore to draw cool camera angles. Get the insights into layering drama, on top of staging, combined with rock solid camera techniques and how to represent each in your storyboards. No previous experience necessary. Anyone willing to better his or her storytelling skills is welcome to attend. Day one Friday November 15th We get you familiar to terminology in filmmaking. We show you live demos and video examples of the art of dramatic scenes from a variety of sources packed full with instructor tips, tricks, and explanations. We will split up and do a group exercise; this will prepare you for our day two. Day two Saturday November 16th
We continue where we left off on day 1 with more lectures and demos; including action scenes!
Then we lead you into groups to work to create an action scene together using our assigned topic. This section lasts 25 minutes and will conclude with a select few getting the opportunity to pitch their created scene to the group getting a live critique from our instructor and the class. This builds on the
team studio dynamics found in real story departments while applying our skills learned throughout the course. A sketchbook and tools to draw with are required.”
Giancarlo Volpe (born July 31, 1974 in Tacoma, Washington) is an Italian American animator, director, and producer. Giancarlo is currently producing the CG television show, “Green Lantern: The Animated Series” working with animation producer Bruce Timm.
Graduating from the School of Visual Arts in 1997, Giancarlo began his career at Humongous Entertainment, animating on the children’s computer games “Pajama Sam 2: Thunder and Lightning Aren’t so Frightening” and Putt-Putt Enters the Race. He moved to Fox (Film Roman) in 1998 to work on King of the Hill, where he was character layout artist and assistant director.
Annie Award winning director Giancarlo Volpe has over 14 years experience in animation, collaborating with many industry greats: including famed filmmaker George Lucas and animation legend Bruce Timm. Volpe has worked on various high profile television shows including Avatar: The Last Airbender, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and King of the Hill. His is currently producing the upcoming Green Lantern: The Animated Series.
Volpe is known for his strong sense of action, humor, and storytelling. His aim is to continue creating successful award winning programs in both film and television, animation and live action.
