Paul Lasaine Concept Designer and Production Designer

Paul Lasaine was born in Los Angeles California in 1964. He grew up in the San Fernando Valley, and spent most summers traveling to the National Parks with his family, where he gained an acute appreciation for the beauty and complexity of nature. These early trips to the parks were to play a major part in shaping him as an artist.

Paul attended college at the California State University at Northridge, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1987. His focus was on illustration.

In early 1988, he received his first job in what would become a career as an artist in the film industry. Though he started out working at the Walt Disney Studios as an illustrator, he soon found his talents were suited for the field of Matte Painting – a visual effects technique whereby highly realistic, painted imagery is seamlessly composited into live action films, creating the illusion of actual scenery.

Over the next seven years, he worked at several film studios as a Matte Painter on dozens of feature films, including: Alien 3, Batman Returns, and Dick Tracy. Paul would go on to head up the Matte Painting Department at Disney until he left the company in 1994.

He then joined the newly formed DreamWorks Animation, where he worked for several years on The Prince of Egypt and The Road to Eldorado as a Designer, Painting Supervisor, and Art Director.

In July of 1999, he moved to New Zealand to work as an Art Director on Peter Jackson’s, The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Since completing the LOTR films, Paul has focused on design for Animation. He’s worked at DreamWorks, Sony, Laika, and is currently working at Warner Brothers, as the Production Designer on an upcoming animated feature. He lives in Studio City with his wife, daughter and two cats.
