Title: 5 Principles That Helped Me Become a Better Artist by Wouter Tulp
Description: “In this talk, I will demonstrate some principles I learned during my work as a freelance illustrator. Instead of showing a step-by-step tutorial of how I work, I will try to explain the underlying principles that I use to make my descicions.
Understanding these priniples helped me to improve my art. The principles are universal, and every artist can use them in their own way to develop their own style.”
Wouter Tulp attended the Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Since his graduation in 2001 he has been making a living as an illustrator.
Starting out as a caricaturist, Wouter now concentrates on character design and concept art for animation. Recentley he worked on a German feature project with Harald Siepermann.
Key in Wouters work is the storytelling aspect. “ the story is the main source for designing the character. I want to know how he feels, how he moves, what he thinks. I try not to design merely the outside of the character, but also the inside”.
