Acclaimed artist and Annie Award winner Carter Goodrich has illustrated sixteen New Yorker covers and has worked as a character designer on many beloved animated films, including Ratatouille; Monsters, Inc.; Finding Nemo; and the latest being Dispicable Me as well as many animation feature films from Pixar, DreamWorks Animaton and Walt Disney Studios. He is a two-time gold-medal recipient from the Society of Illustrators in New York and a graduate of the Rhose Island School of Design. His work has also appeared in Newsweek, Forbes, and Time. Mr. Goodrich has a very busy schedule and we are proud he has accepted our invitation to present him and his work at CTNX 2010.

Here are just two of the many books he has illustrated.

“Zorro and Mister Bud in, Say Hello to Zorro” published by Simon and Schuster is the first in a coming series due out next summer.

Mister Bud is a dog of routine. He has wake up time, nap time, rest time, dinner time, etc. And everyone knows to follow his schedule.

Then disaster strikes. A stranger comes home at “make a fuss time” and throws everything off! Zorro is little bit bossy and Mister Bud wants nothing to do with him. But when the dogs discover they like the same things (like chasing the cat and napping), everything becomes more fun. As long as everyone follows the schedule.

The Hermit Crab
Hermit Crab is no hero. He would rather just keep to himself. He’s content to spend the day looking for food and staying comfy in his shell. And when he finds a new shell, he is excited to have something so beautiful for himself. But when a mysterious contraption lands in the center of town, no one knows what to make of it. The lobster thinks it’s a restaurant. The bluefish thinks it’s a trap. No one is brave enough to go near it until they realize that flounder is trapped underneath! When Hermit Crab comes upon the contraption looking for the source of the delicious smell, he inadvertantly rescues the flounder and everyone in town cheers his triumph, but is he the hero or is his shell?

A Creature Was Stirring
‘Twas the night before Christmas, and in this great house the creature who stirred was a boy, not a mouse. And while upstairs his parents were dreaming and snoring, with Santa so close, sleep seemed pretty boring.

Esteemed New Yorker cover artist Carter Goodrich retells the story of ‘Twas the night before Christmas from the child’s point of view. With Clement Clarke Moore’s classic poem one one side of every page, and a child’s comedic rhyming on the other, this magical book about seeing and dreaming of Santa Claus will inspire readers of all ages to believe. Against a luminous backdrop of midnight and silver, memories of Christmases past and present converge in a modern classic born in the tradition of The Polar Express.

MARK McDONNELL is a well-rounded versatile Visual Development Artist working in the Animation and Entertainment industry. Starting his career as a toy designer for Applause, he has held a wide variety of crafts within the commercial art world before setting his sights on the Animation and Entertainment Industry. From Toy Designer, Art Director, Theme Park Designer and into Television Animation and Feature Films, Mark has found his home working alongside some of the industries best and brightest talents over the years.
In order to continue his overall artistic development and passion for the Animation and Entertainment Industry, Mark left the comfort of a corner office as an Art Director at Technicolor Creative Services (his home for 7 years) so he could move on and freely work on a wide variety of development and freelance projects. These projects lead him to be hired on the recently released “Tinkerbell” and the follow-up film “Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure” while working at Walt Disney’s Disney Toon Studios. Mark’s responsibilities for these films were to create beat boards, environment designs and help flush out the world with appropriate prop designs for story pitches and related to John Lasseter and his staff.
From here Mark has worked for a variety of Television and Feature Films within the Animation and Entertainment Studios. His client list includes Walt Disney Feature, Disney Toon Studios, Walt Disney Television Animation, Pixar, Miramax, Fox, H.I.T. Entertainment, New Line, Mattel, Sony, Legendary Pictures, The Jim Henson Company, Big Idea Inc. and many more.
Following the same passion he has for design and development, Mark has made a concerted effort to give back and help instruct the new generation of Animation and Entertainment artists. Mark has found great comfort being an instructor for various institutions over the past 5 years. Coming from a family of teachers he realized while instructing at The Animation Academy, teaching was a necessary and rewarding job that he felt needed to be a part of his ability to give back, just as so many others had done for him. He is currently instructing the employees at The Walt Disney Company and at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Arts (LAAFA).

In addition to his day job and instructing, Mark recently released his first full color hardback book, “The Art and Feel of Making It Real: Gesture Drawing for the Animation and Entertainment Industry.” This 208-page Art and Instruction bible was derived from his philosophy of giving back. “The Art and Feel of Making It Real” now allows access of industry-only secrets and tips to everyone willing to take up the challenge of working in the industry and how it functions in today’s times. The book comes with a foreword by the legendary Eric Goldberg (of Genie fame), and contributing words by Andreas Deja, Marcelo Vignali and industry instructor Karl Gnass.

Come join Mark McDonnell when he brings his talent, artwork and books to share with you all weekend long at CTN-X 2009.

Chris Oatley has worked as a visual development artist and a content creator in the entertainment industries for six years. Chris has worked in visual development on films at Disney and The Weinstein Company. He has developed music videos for Geffen Records and he directed one for EMI. He has also worked in development on several video games from Sony, EA, Konami, Activision and Hasbro. He specializes in character design and development for animation.

Chris spends vast amounts of time creating content for his website, ChrisOatley.com where you can find digital painting tutorials, interviews with working artists, free Photoshop resources, articles about painting, drawing and screenwriting and of course, his own artwork. His goal is to inspire his audience. He loves his wife, Angie more than he can explain and finds that her patience and encouragement has significantly increased his artistic ability. His tiny brown dachshund is named Sydney because Chris and Angie are big ‘Alias’ fans. He dreams of being an art director in animation and of writing and directing feature films (both live action and animated). He currently lives in Venice, California.

The Future Has Arrived: Enrich and Extend Your Art Life By Embracing The Internet.

In this session, you will learn how to create, market and distribute your own creative content for little or no money, how to cultivate authentic relationships in online creative communities and how to monetize digital content. Most importantly you will learn how the ancient art of sharing knowledge, in light of the possibilities provided by various new media can redefine your artistic future and engage your audience in an unprecedented way.

Join us in this rare opportunity when these top designers in the field of animation come together for a round table discussion.

Gregg Couch (TBA) Designer from Blue Sky Studios.

Jason Deamer began his career at Pixar Animation Studios in 1998 as a Sketch Artist on Monsters, Inc. He has worked as a Character Designer on a number of Pixar films including the Oscar®-winning Finding Nemo and Ratatouille, as well as the Short films One Man Band and Lifted. Deamer is currently in development, working on a future Disney•Pixar release.

Inspired early in life by Spiderman, Star Wars and Tin Tin to pursue a career in drawing, Deamer leads a small team of artists at Pixar who work with the film’s director to design the characters. Prior to joining Pixar, Deamer worked designing graphics and illustrations for Plan B skate boards.

Deamer grew up in Mill Valley, California and attended the University of California at Davis and the California College of Arts and Crafts in the Bay Area. He currently lives in San Francisco.

Andreas Deja was born 1957 in Gdańsk, Poland. Deja moved with his family to Dinslaken, Germany in 1958. After graduating from Theodor-Heuss Gymnasium (secondary school), he studied graphic design at the Folkwang-Schule in Essen, Germany. A lifelong fan of Disney animated films, Deja was hired by the studio in 1980 after he had corresponded with Eric Larson.[1] The first film on which he worked was The Black Cauldron, during which time he shared a cubicle with the film director Tim Burton.

On an interview with Clay Katis on the Animation Podcast, Deja stated that if the podcast needed anything on the Nine Old Men, to refer to him because of the vast amount of information he has collected over the years. He later revealed that one of his ambitions is to publish one book for each of the Nine Old Men.

Deja is best known as the supervising animator of some of the most memorable Disney villains: Gaston from Beauty and the Beast, Jafar in Aladdin and Scar from The Lion King.

Ryan Hungerford was made and raised in the Midwest. Growing up, he drew in school and got detention.. Then he got detention for drawing in detention. After High School and all the detention, he still wanted to draw. So he made his way to the left coast and went to school at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. Since then he’s been working as a graphic artist, designing characters, toys, and other stuff. Outside of art, Ryan has an unquenchable love for the Punk Rocks, Lucha Libre, and Ovaltine.

Some of the things he’ll be selling at the Expo will be: sketchbooks, prints, toys, and original art.

I’ll be selling my full color 64 page hardcover graphic novel: “Seaweed and the Cure for Mildew”. The book is an oversized giant measuring a whooping 12 x 15 inches and will be the perfect and unique gift for the holiday season. The book is the first of a two part story telling the tale of Seaweed, a pelican who sets out on a journey to find a cure for death in a book rumored to be written by the Devil. A sketchbook is included in the back of the book that includes the making of art, inking tips, and unused character designs.
